    Pumpkins Galore !

The pumpkins and squashes planted earlier this year in the walled garden are now harvested and are on sale outside the Woodland Café. We've had an excellent first crop this year - in all shapes and sizes! So don't miss out on some home grown produce from within our historic grounds. All proceeds go towards further restoration in the gardens.

Need some pumpkin culinary inspiration? Irena, from the Woodland Café has created a delicious Pumpkin Soup recipe. It includes using the pumpkin as a handy soup terrine, this is of course is optional but adds drama and fun to the final presentation. Enjoy!

    Preparation method

    1. Cut the top off the pumpkin and set aside. Scoop out the seeds and fibres from the middle and discard.
    2. Using a sharp knife and a spoon, carefully hollow out the pumpkin, removing the flesh and setting aside. (It is important that you do not cut right up to the inside of the skin or pierce it. Leave 2cm/1in of flesh all around the inside.)
    3. Roughly chop the scooped-out pumpkin flesh.
    4. Melt the butter in a large pan with a lid over a low heat and add the onions. Cook the onions gently for 10-15 minutes, until they are softened and golden-brown.
    5. Add the pumpkin flesh, the cinnamon and nutmeg, and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Increase the heat to medium and cover with the lid. Cook for 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the base from burning, until the pumpkin is cooked through.
    6. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Transfer the soup to a food processor in batches and blend until smooth.
    7. Return the soup to the pan and bring to a low simmer and cook for a further half an hour.
    8. Forty-five minutes before eating, preheat the oven to 170C/335F/Gas 3.
    9. Pour the soup into the hollow pumpkin shell, add the sherry and stir to combine.
    10. Place the reserved pumpkin 'lid' onto the pumpkin and place onto a large baking tray. Cook in the oven for about 45 minutes, to bring the soup up to temperature.
    11. To serve, carefully remove from the oven and serve the soup in the pumpkin at the table. Ladle into bowls and serve.

The aim will be to sell the produce (pumpkins, squashes and honey) and generate income for further restoration. Watch this space for further news and updates.

New Head Gardner Andrew Turvey and His Top Tips!

We are delighted to welcome Andrew Turvey to our team as new Head Gardener and Estate Manager. He has recently joined the Park and brings with him a wealth of garden restoration experience. Andrew was previously Head Gardener at Myddelton House and Advisor for the Royal Horticultural Society.

    Turvey's Top Tips

TOP TIP: Inspect fruit trees during late June/early July for heavily laden branches of fruit. Thinning fruits now will help to ensure that branches don’t deform or snap and will help to improve ripening. Fruit trees will regulate themselves to a degree and this is most evident in June when a number of small fruits can be seen on the ground at the base of the tree, this process is named the June Drop

TOP TIP: During July and August, ensure that Camellia do not dry out. Lack of water at this time enhances the chance of bud drop the following spring prior to flowering.

And there we have it! Sign up for our monthly newsletter to get more updates from Moggerhanger Park and helpful gardening tips from Andrew Turvey.

The children of Moggerhanger Lower School had a special last day of term, cutting the ribbon, testing out the new Woodland Playground and eating cake at Moggerhanger Park !

From tiny tots to young teens, children are free to jump, swing and climb all day long. This specially commissioned playground was designed by William Hardie who is currently appearing on Channel 4's 'George Clarke's Amazing Spaces ' programme. The playground blends with the natural environment to create a safe play area with plenty of bark for soft landings.

The playground was funded by Moggerhanger Park Preservation Trust, funds secured by Beds Council, and the Moggerhanger Park Friends.

The Countess of Erroll, chair of MHPT said ' We are delighted that this community facility is now open in time for the school holidays. We hope it provides much pleasure and fun !'

After the storms last December and the constant rain the weather has been very unpredictable. It does feel like early spring and with the snowdrops now starting to cover the Garden Woodland grounds we also have all our other bulbs poking through. Bluebells and daffodils are waking up but may go back to sleep if we have a very heavy cold spell.

But let's concentrate on our snowdrops. The Woodland Garden wakes up around this time and all the way through to the beginning of Summer walking through is just an absolute delight. We start now with the snowdrops, and then there is a succession of scent and colour with the bluebells, woodland anemones, and woodland garlic.

Our snowdrops were planted when Humphry Repton did his design work at Moggerhanger Park so they are around 200 years old! The main variety that you will see in the Woodland is Galanthus nivalis f. pleniflorus 'Flore Pleno' and they are fragrant.

    Enjoy your walk!

    GARDEN BLOG - 26/11/2013

As the cold weather approaches we are rushing to get the last of the herbaceous planting done for this year. We have a window for planting this week as temperature are reaching 10 degrees tomorrow. Planting at this time of the year is not advisable but if conditions are mild and your plants are in a pot they can go in at any time of the year as long as the ground is not frozen. I will be covering the root area with some mulch to keep the plants warmer and protected, hopefully they will develop a good root system for a good start next season.

I started weeding and lifting the turf in front of the Ice House with the help of Saturday volunteer gardener Kyle Vivian. As this is a shade area I will be planting Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Carpet' to create an edge and Brunera macrophyla 'Jack Frost inside. Apparently rabbits don't like these plants! We'll see...

    • GARDEN BLOG - digging!
    • Monday, 2 September 2013

While the whole of the country battles with wasps this year we are trying to avoid them by thinking about all the digging we need to do at Moggerhanger Park. It is a particularly bad year for wasps; or perhaps I should say it's a bad year for us but a good one for wasps! We have treated the nests and done as much as we could but sometimes you just can't beat nature and this year everybody is suffering from it.

But back to our digging... Last Sunday we started digging out weeds in the 80 metre long border adjacent to the Godfrey Walled Garden facing the Orchard Meadow. We are hoping to take it all back to grass and wild flowers. We had the help of a large group of volunteers from National Trust Cambridgeshire Volunteers plus Wimpole Hall's Head Gardener, Philip Whaites and his wife Janet who kindly gave up their Sunday to help us. Hannah one of our long term volunteers who had left to start a new job also joined us on that day. But what really made the day was the delicious cake that Lady Isabelle Erroll brought for us to have at the end of the day - the volunteers said they would be coming back! It was a difficult task and they exceeded all expectations of what could be achieved on the day so it was a truly memorable Sunday for all of us and even Lady Erroll took a fork and had a go at digging herself!

The restoration work continues and we are still looking for keen volunteers who would like to join us on a regular basis. We meet on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.30 and there is the option of doing half day finishing at lunch time or a full day at 3.30pm. If yo are interested please get in touch, you can e-mail

    GARDEN BLOG - Martagon Lily

We are restoring the gardens at Moggerhanger Park and we are fundraising for plants. The plant list is so long that some times thinking of fund raising gets overwhelming. So, when on one of my inspections of the grounds I find something like this my hopes rise to the sky.

What a beauty! Lilium martagon is in my future planting plans but we already have one at Moggerhanger Park. It is very reassuring to have found one growing in our grounds without cultivating it, to me this means that it is in the right place.

It is one of the first lilies cultivated in British gardens with its first description in gardening books going back to 1596. One of its common names is Turk's Cap Lily because of its similarity with a Turkish head style turban. Lilium Martagon is a bulbous perennial held by an elegant and erect stem full of scented racemes of, in this case, pinkish purple flowers in mid summer. You will find it in shady areas where the soil is humus rich. Look out for it when you walk through from the Orchard Meadow to the ornamental lawn.

Another week of digging out weeds and planning for soil preparation. Our aim is to do some planting in the areas that we get ready for the Autumn season.  You can just imagine the large amount of plants that we need.  Our volunteers Phil, Hannah, Roy and Lorna are working very hard alongside me every week and their efforts are very much appreciated.  But, we haven't got a budget for plants so we came out with the idea of offering a quiz night to raise funds.  If you still haven't booked please do it soon, we still have a couple of tables available.  It will be an evening full of prizes, fun and healthy competition. We are offering a bottle of wine or soft drinks with pizza and wedges for each table.  There will also be an open bar for anyone wishing to purchase their own drinks.  There will be a top prize for the winning table and a raffle with smaller gifts. GARDEN BLOG - wild garlic

Today we had Kew diploma student, Matt Parker, and Wrest Park garden apprentice, Jo Bowman, contributing as garden volunteers for a few hours.  They both enjoyed a lovely walk at Moggerhanger Park before doing a bit digging and weeding which is greatly appreciated.

The Garden Woodland smells of garlic! The sweet scent of the Bluebells is slowly being overpowered by the smell of wild garlic, Allium ursinum, in our Woodland. They normally grow with the bluebells and they are an Ancient Woodland Indicator (AWI).  The round umbels are made of white star shaped flowers.  If you see some near the paths during your walk have a look at the stems that hold the flowers, they have a triangular shape.

On other news, we are having a quiz night on the 28th of June to raise funds to buy plants for the restorations of the gardens.   Mel Watson, Chairwoman of the London Plant Heritage group, will be leading the quiz and the tickets include a bottle of wine for each table and nibbles. Please e-mail me if you would like to join us

Another week of hard work at the Moggerhanger Park Gardens. The Garden Team is now up and running with new volunteers Hannah, Phil and Lorna who are working alongside the Head Gardener. Our main task at the moment is to clear weeds from the site concentrating on the Ice House area and its shrubberies. We are trying to avoid using chemicals which means a lot of meticulous and laborious work extracting the plants' roots. Ground Elder or Aegopodium podagraria, has become a bit of an obsession. It grows predominantly in shady areas like in our woodland or where we are digging at the moment. It spreads by underground rhizomes that you need to dig out thoroughly which is practically impossible. There will always be a bit of root left so you need to keep a constant eye on any new shoots. Disposing of it is also tricky, and we don't add it to the compost. The plant is very invasive but we are very persistent so I think Aegopodium podagraria has met its match! By the way, the bluebells are still out there so if you still haven't enjoyed them or want a second round of beautiful scent come and visit. The park is open every day and entry is free. If you fancy volunteering with the Garden Team you are welcome to get in touch with me. Please e-mail me at

As I write this, it is raining at Moggerhanger Park.  But a bit of rain ahead of a lovely hot 'Bank Holiday Weekend' is not a bad thing.

Moggerhanger's Garden Woodland is now officially covered in blue; the bluebells are blooming at last! If you decide to visit this weekend take a look also at the Orchard as you come out of the Garden Woodland. We have now finished planting a number of apple trees. They are all local varieties and we have protected them from deer and rabbits with tree guards.

Keep following our blog for more news on the restoration of the gardens, there are new things happening every week. And if you fancy a bit of gardening, we are looking for volunteer gardeners!

    GARDEN BLOG - 27 APRIL 2013

The Garden Woodland is looking fantastic at the moment. It is one of our favourite spots in the Moggerhanger Park landscape. The bluebells are just about to flower but if you are around this week you will see that the ground is covered with white flowers. These are wood anemones, Anemone nemorosa. The yellow flowers next to them are lesser celandine, Ranunculus ficaria. If you are planting them in your garden you will need to control their spread. Bulbils will form in the leaf axils and very easily colonise your grounds. It is well worth it if you have time to work on them though, they are very pretty!

In winter deciduous woodlands allow for light to go through all the way to the ground.  This is when winter bulbs like snowdrops or bluebells can grow displaying masses of beautiful flowers.  Right now in the Garden Woodland at Moggerhanger Park you can see the snowdrop’s delicate white hanging flowers, these were planted by Humphry Repton 200 hundred years ago.  The snowdrop's proper name is Galanthus and the main cultivar you will see along your walk through the Garden Woodland is Galanthus nivalis f. pleniflorus ‘Flore Pleno’.  Gently lift the flower head to appreciate the green tipped inner segments.  Enjoy your walk!

New developments at Moggerhanger Park are commencing with a three year restoration project of the gardens and the appointment of a Head Gardener to lead the works.  Detailed planting plans are in place for all areas of the grounds around the house which include the car park areas, walled gardens with a kitchen garden and herbaceous borders, shrubberies, a sensory garden in the Aviary, and an orchard.  The garden work has already started in the front of the house with the planting of limes, oaks and walnut trees.  Planting lists and elevations will be available in the future for all those interested in the designing side of the work too.  The next task will be to plant a number of fruit trees in the orchard and create a meadow next to the Garden Room as a gateway to the Garden Woodland.  There are also imminent plans for a playground for families with children to enjoy.  We are very excited about all these developments and we hope to restore this unique Reptonian landscape to its full glory for all to enjoy. Our aim is to create a sustainable garden in a historic setting with the highest horticultural standards.   If you are interested in taking part in this and would like to volunteer in the gardens at Moggerhanger Park please e-mail
