The Cistercian Abbey of Warden was founded in 1135 by Walter Espec. The monks cleared the woodland around the abbey and planted the vineyards. Left abandoned for 350 years the vineyards were replanted with five varieties of grapes in 1986, the first vintage being harvested in 1990. Warden wines have continued to grow in stature and strength and won many awards in the years since, including several from the prestigious International Wine Challenge
